A winemaker’s summer selections

Company News | December 2023

Head Winemaker Premium Wines, James Evers, has been in the Nepenthe family since 2007.

He describes his winemaking style as fresh, easy-drinking, and fruit-forward. He aims to produce wines that are balanced, vibrant and capture the unique terroir of the Adelaide Hills.

For James, it’s about letting the fruit be the hero. Minimum intervention is key, and his job is to gently cradle the flavours of the fruit in the bottle without complicating the process.

As summer hits full swing in the Adelaide Hills, fresh and easy drinking is welcomed in the Australian heat. These wines make the perfect pairing to your festive celebrations this holiday period.

“Summer wine drinking is all about freshness and vibrancy for me. The start of summer brings the festive period which makes bubbles like our Sparkling Cuvee ideal and the fresh yet complex wines like our 2022 Pinnacle Chardonnay and Albarino perfect parings for light summery dishes and not forgetting our Apex Pinot Noir to enjoy with the 2 weeks of post-Christmas leg ham! Enjoy the wonderful Summer period.” – James Evers, Head Winemaker Premium Wines

NV Sparkling Cuvee

You can’t go wrong with a Sparkling during summer, and as we’re coming up to the festive period it’s a great time to include in some bubbles.
Nepenthe’s Adelaide Hills Sparkling is fresh, bright and citrus, it’s very celebratory and pairs excellently with seafood, so this is a no brainer.

2022 Pinnacle Albarino

A bright wine full of stone fruits at the fore, followed by hints of jasmine and honeysuckle. This stunning wine has been showing up spectacularly at recent award shows, consistently achieving over 90 points. I can attest to it being one of the best wines of our Vintage 22’ and one I’ll be recommending all summer long.

2022 Pinnacle Chardonnay

I couldn’t go past including a Chardonnay on my list as it’s my favourite varietal. The newly released 2022 Pinnacle Chardonnay is a wonderful example luscious complex flavours of nectarine and grapefruit with hints of roasted hazelnuts with zippy citrus finish. This exciting wine will go great with an Aussie Christmas lunch of seafood, turkey and salads.

2021 APEX Pinot Noir

Nepenthe’s newest APEX addition is a deliciously elegant Pinot Noir full of cherries, raspberries and subtle potpourri notes that can be enjoyed year-round. A great option as a gift or to share amongst friends at your next special get together.
