Highly awarded Australian winemaker, McGuigan Wines, has once again been recognised as a world-class wine producer with its 2007 Shortlist Semillon taking out the International Trophy for White Single-Varietal under £15 at the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards in London last night.

The trophy – which recognises the best ‘single varietal white wine in the world under £15’ from some 15,000+ entries – takes into account all whites wines entered from wine producing countries across the globe. Put in context, the 2007 Shortlist Semillon from the Hunter Valley triumphed over Chardonnay, Rieslings, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and all other white grape varieties entered.

The announcement follows previous success at Decanter World Wine Awards with the 2003 McGuigan Bin 9000 Semillon taking out the Best Australian White Single Variety under £10 at the 2010 awards, and the 2007 McGuigan Bin 9000 Semillon being awarded Best Australian White Single Variety under £15 at last year’s competition. Chief Winemaker for McGuigan Wines, Neil McGuigan, said; “What an incredible achievement, and a great result for the Hunter Valley and Australia.  To be acknowledged as the best single white variety in the world under £15 – triumphing over all other white varieties in the competition – is yet further endorsement of our commitment to quality and consistency, and our award-winning reputation.”

From the 15,000+ entries in the 2014 awards, only 33 wines were awarded an international Trophy, putting the 2007 Shortlist Semillon in rare company. In total judges awarded 454 gold medals, 2003 Silver Medals and 4378 Bronze medals. Not to be outdone, McGuigan Wines’ young Semillon was also recognised by the Decanter panel, with the 2013 Bin 9000 taking out Gold at this year’s awards. 2007 Shortlist Semillon is available exclusively at the McGuigan Cellar Door in the Hunter Valley, NSW.
