What’s in your glass this Dry July?

Company News | July 2025

In this interview with Amy Blackburn, Lead Winemaker – NoLo, we explore some of the thinking behind Australian Vintage’s commitment to NoLo wines, the art of crafting flavour without alcohol, and how Dry July is reshaping the way we connect, celebrate, and enjoy wine, without compromise.

As July draws to a close, many Australians have embraced mindful drinking or abstained altogether. Dry July isn’t just a personal health challenge; it’s a cultural movement. And for those in the wine industry, it presents a powerful opportunity to promote balance and inclusion.

At Australian Vintage, we believe wine should be enjoyed, not overindulged. While wine has sometimes been grouped in with broader alcohol categories, it’s worth recognising that wine culture is distinct: it’s about shared meals, connection, and community.

What is NoLo?

Supporting Dry July allows us to align with responsible enjoyment and offer choices that fit modern lifestyles. NoLo (No- and Low-Alcohol) wines are crafted with care to deliver the experience of wine, minus the alcohol.

“We start the process with great quality wine that is truly varietal, then we gently remove the alcohol using the spinning cone column process,” says Amy Blackburn.

“After that, we blend the dealcoholised wine using techniques we have honed over many years of experience to produce a wine that gives the consumer a genuinely enjoyable experience, along with the varietal expression you expect and many of the typical wine cues, without the alcohol.”

It’s not easy; alcohol contributes a lot to a wine’s texture and complexity, but our team has spent years perfecting the craft.

Why does this matter?

Because rituals around wine — whether it’s a Shiraz over dinner or bubbles at brunch —don’t need to stop for Dry July.

Our McGuigan Zero, Tempus Two Zero, and Not Guilty ranges allow you to stay in the moment without missing out. The bottles look the same. The experience feels the same.

“And that glass of Tempus Two Zero Prosecco? It pairs beautifully with a slow-cooked chicken casserole,” promises the winemaker Amy herself.

Perhaps most exciting is the shift in public perception. NOLO is no longer niche – it’s mainstream, with a loyal fan base and growing curiosity.

As one of the early pioneers in this space, Australian Vintage continues to innovate globally with products that are winning both medals and hearts.

So, this Dry July, whether you’re pressing pause on alcohol completely or simply lightening up, there’s a NOLO wine ready to join you.

Because good choices and good wine should be celebrated.
